It has been over thirty-five (35) years since the National Bar Association, Women Lawyers Division, Philadelphia Chapter (WLD) was formed to address the challenges to advancement in the legal profession faced by women of color in the Philadelphia area. One of the group's core mission is dedication to assisting law students during the education process. The school to lawyer pipeline has many points of entry. The Foundation, the charitable arm of the WLD, identified one of those points where we could make a difference.

The WLD established book scholarships in Dr. Alexander’s honor in 1984 as a tribute to her career and accomplishments; because of her deep belief in obtaining the highest education and training possible and because the pursuit of knowledge through reading was one of Dr. Alexander’s greatest pleasures. The Foundation distributes book scholarships that range in amounts from $500 to $1,000 to assist deserving young women with the rising cost of books in law school.
In 1993 the WLD, with assistance from the Foundation, celebrated a second illuminary of law, Justice Juanita Kidd Stout.  While known to be tough in the courtroom, Justice Stout was also known as a strong advocate for education with a genuine love of the law. She was a mentor, friend and guiding light for lawyers, both new and seasoned, and judges in the City of Philadelphia and the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. Her passion for justice and commitment to legal education not only inspired, but compelled the Foundation to establish a tuition scholarship in her name. The Justice Juanita Kidd Stout Tuition Scholarship is given annually to a deserving female law student of color who best exemplifies this champion of justice. The scholarship award amount is $5,000.

This June, join WLD and its Foundation as we celebrate 35 years of legendary leadership. We will be awarding past leadership of WLD, while also raising funds for our annual law student scholarships.  To purchase tickets, please click the button.
